O Earth, Return!

Music about the passage of time, featuring Jonathan Dove’s thrilling The Passing of the Year

Who: Jervaulx Singers
When: 12 February, 2022 7:30pm
Where: St John's Church, Sharow, HG4 5BJ

A programme of choral music about the passage of time. The programme opens with Bach’s glittering motet Der Geist hilft. Britten’s Five Flower Songs beautifully set English pastoral poetry, giving his idiosyncratic twist to the part-song model of his predecessors. Lauridsen’s Les Chansons des roses continue the theme of seasons in nature. The fifth song in the cycle, Dirait-on, magically evokes the wistfulness of the chansons populaires immortalized by Edith Piaf. Jonathan Dove’s The Passing of the Year concludes the programme. One of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music, Dove’s writing is charged with intensity and beauty. The work sets seven texts with moving directness and a beguiling sense of the seasons’ passing. For more details and to book tickets, please visit our website, www.jervaulxsingers.com.
