Parry’s Songs of Farewell were written during the First World War when a number of his pupils at the Royal College of Music were being killed in action. His choice of texts are thought to reflect a yearning to escape the violence of a world at war, and to find peace in a heavenly realm. In A Farewell To Arms, Rodney Bennett displays an exquisite sensitivity to the poetry of Ralph Knevet (17th century) and George Peele (16th century) and their mediations on the homely life after years spent soldiering.
